In September 1894, George Westinghouse hosted a reception for Civil War veterans at his new air brake plant in Wilmerding.
Not to be outdone, his wife Marguerite also staged a grand reception of her own at Solitude, the family’s Homewood estate, as reported in this Pittsburgh Post-Gazette society column from September 11, 1894.
In addition to detailing the guest list and floral arrangements, it also provides rare descriptions of Solitude’s furnishings and decor.
